Phonics and Reading

Lincolnshire Reading Pledge- Bronze Award.

We are thrilled to announce the receipt of our first certificate, marking our progress on the path towards the Lincolnshire gold award for reading. Our mission in Lincolnshire is to foster a love for reading among all children, empowering them to become lifelong readers.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported us in attaining the Bronze award. Your  support has been instrumental in our achievements so far. As we set our sights on the Silver award, we encourage you to stay tuned and discover the various ways you can contribute to our continued success. Together, we can make a significant impact on promoting literacy and instilling a passion for reading in our community.

At Holy Trinity Tattershall we know that by putting reading at the heart of all our learning, children will be able to enter into exciting worlds through books, improve their powerful knowledge and confidently access the curriculum we provide. We believe everyone at our school has a duty to promote reading and this begins in reception and throughout Key Stage One. We develop children’s love for books through sustained structured conversations and discussions.

Our aim is to help children develop a lifelong love for reading so we teach reading in reception through the Read Write Inc. programme. Children learn to decode and recognise words through daily, high quality, systematic, phonics teaching. (See link below for more information). Skills in comprehension, stamina and fluency are taught in Key Stage One and developed in Key Stage Two where children are taught through whole class guided reading lessons.

Foundation Stage & Key Stage 1- Read Write Inc

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 at Holy Trinity Primary School we use Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc phonics program to teach sounds and early reading.

Children love learning how to read through Read Write Inc, and we know you will soon become familiar with Fred, Fred talk, Fred fingers and so much more. Please click for more information:

Fred Talk & Fred fingers

Fred frog can only speaks in sounds. This is Fred Talk. We encourage children to help Fred blend sounds into words. For example, Fred would say c-a-t, children would say cat. Children quickly hear the sounds to make words. This is an important phase in early reading so singing, rhyming and playing Fred games all help towards helping your child read.

We use Fred fingers to help spell words. For example, we ask children to show 3 Fred fingers for the word m-a-t, pinch the sound and write the word.

Year 2 & Key Stage 2

By Spring term we expect all children in Year 2 to begin whole class guided reading along side their peers in Key Stage 2. At Holy Trinity Tattershall we know that our children learn best from reading together and supporting each other to develop their skills in vocabulary and comprehension.

Whole class reading takes place every day across Key Stage 2 using whole class reading activities as the focus to improve children's reading skills.

Vocabulary is a key priority and children are encouraged to  develop their knowledge and understanding of unknown words. Pre teaching of vocabulary allows those children who need extra support to participate fully in lessons.  Our aim is that children complete a novel by the end of each term which sparks their interest in developing their love for reading.

Furthermore, all subjects across the curriculum have focused vocabulary that is shared with children at the start of a new term to demonstrate our commitment to providing children with a vocabulary enriched curriculum.

Each session is planned to engage children to develop their reading skills as they progress through school. This is further supported through our reading spine and subject based books that further develop and hone our pupil's passion for reading.
